The Children of
Anthony Hardaway & Mary Elam
Mary Elam's earliest record is that of her marriage to Anthony Hardaway on December 21, 1885 in Gonzales County. She was the daughter of Andy and Mary Elam. Anthony Hardaway's wife Mary Elam were schoolmates at the Hoods Point School in the late 1870s through the mid-1880s. With Mary Elam, and before Anthony Hardaway's presumed death, were born two daughters called Clara and Viola Hardaway. Mary then remarried to Mr. Daniel Satterwhite on August 10, 1897 in Gonzales County. Mary Satterwhite (nee Elam) passed away September 27, 1925 out of San Antonio, Texas. She was buried at Eastview Cemetery also in San Antonio, Texas. The official disposition of Anthony Hardaway and his death is unclear, but he is presumed to have died sometime before 1897 in Texas--possibly in Gonzales County. Daniel Satterwhite passed away January 23, 1937 of a stroke and was buried at San Jose Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
CLARA CHESTNUT (nee HARDAWAY)
Clara Hardaway was born March 4, 1884 according to her death certificate, and was made a widow by "A. Scott" by 1919. She remarried to Isaac Chestnut (1874-1926), a son of Charlotte Chestnut (1831-1913), on November 18, 1919 in San Antonio, TX, and is not presumed to have children. Following available census data and city directory information, she performed work as both a laundress and seamstress for a sewing-project. Clara died May 25, 1942 in San Antonio, TX, and was buried at Eastview Cemetery.
[Note: A 'Laura Jackson' is identified as Clara's mother on the Social Security Applications and Claims Index.]
VIOLA MILLER (nee HARDAWAY)
Viola Hardaway was born January 27, 1889, and died a widow on December 2, 1958, according to her death certificate. Vital documents available point to Viola having one daughter called Ella Mae. Viola died in Houston, TX, and was buried in San Antonio, TX, at an undetermined City Cemetery.
[Note: Ella Mae Freeman (1910-1969) can be found as a widow in her 1940-census, with her daughter Dorothy J. Freeman (born c.1934)].
