The Children of
Sidney Hardaway & Lula Mae Johnson Jones
Lula Mae Johnson can also be found listed as 'Loneza'. She was the daughter of a woman called Caroline from Mississippi. Lula Mae was born in about 1877 in Texas. During her time living with her mother in 1900 she wore her stepfather Albert Jackson's surname. She married first to a D.D. Jones on November 27, 1891 in Gonzales County and bore him four children, and after his alleged death she remarried to Sidney Hardaway on December 23, 1900 in the same county. Sidney and Lula Mae bore three children of their own before her death sometimes before 1910.
According to his 1918 death certificate, Ollie Hardaway died when he was 21-years-old, issuing 1897 as his year of birth. Curiously, the only other document which describes him is his 1918 WW1 Draft Card. The WW1 Draft Card from September 18, 1918 indicates Ollie’s date of birth as August 28, 1897, his employment as a "cane stripper" for the Cuero Oil Manufacturing Company, and denotes his wife as a Mrs. Helen Hardaway, living in Cuero, Texas, in DeWitt County.
Ollie Hardaway is represented slightly different on his death certificate, informed by his father Sidney Hardaway. He is recorded as being 21, but with no specified birth date, and as a single laborer at an oil mill. He died of pneumonia on October 23, 1918, and was buried in Cuero, Texas, the following day.
Ollie's twenty-year-old widow, Helen Hardaway, can be found living on the 1920 DeWitt County Census in District 37 of Yorktown on Ninth Street with her 22 mo.-old son also called Ollie Hardaway. She works as a wash-woman for a private family. Helen and her child cannot seem to be located after the 1920-census year.
